The 1989 is exceptional. Exceptional because with the war raging around, the Chateau Musar winery was hit on several occasions and the deep cellars used as air raid shelters. Serge Hochar remained philosophical throughout, and said of the 1989 vintage: "A dry winter followed by a mild summer led to an exceptional vintage of very good maturity". This specific bottling is also exceptional as it is the only red wine single varietal bottling currently available at Chateau Musar, produced exclusively from Carignan grapes.

The nose on the 1989 vintage is remarkably fragrant and attractive. Intriguing notes of roasted peanuts, smoked meat and cumin. Nice layering of flavours and texture. It is indeed a very fine wine; delicate, elegant with good tannins and great length.
